How common are STDs in Hong Kong
According to the charity AIDS Concern in Hong Kong, STDs are higher than the Better2Know global average in Hong Kong. This means we see more STDs than we would expect in every 100 people we test. Women are more likely to test positive than men.
This is probably due to Hong Kong women being worried about having an STI Test and putting it off. Please do not be worried. We will help you every step of the way. We will not tell anyone that you have been tested. Women’s fertility can be affected quickly by an STI infection, so it is important to get tested and get treated.
When should I get an STI test in Hong Kong?
You should have an STI test when you have a new partner or have had unprotected sexual intercourse in Hong Kong. This helps to protect your health, as well as the health of your future partners.
Most STIs do not have any symptoms, especially in the first few weeks and months of a new infection. In this time, you can pass the infection on to someone, and the STI can cause lasting damage to you. So, the only way to know if you have an STI is to have a test.
When symptoms do occur they can include:
Unusual discharge from your penis (men) or vagina (women)
Pain or discomfort when having a wee
Pain or discomfort during sex
A blister or bump in your genital area, rectum, or mouth
A new rash in your genital area
Swollen glands
Sore throat
Feeling unwell or tired all the time
Cold or fever
These symptoms are also common across other illnesses, and it is important not to diagnose an STI on symptoms alone. This may mean that you do not get the right treatment, and therefore you would not be cured.
If you have any of these symptoms please call our Hong Kong team on the number above who will be happy to help you.
