Product Information

What is progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone produced by the body that has key roles in the menstrual cycle, fertility, and pregnancy. One of its key functions is to help prepare the uterus for embryo implantation and pregnancy. Progesterone levels vary throughout the menstrual cycle. They increase after ovulation has occurred and remain low when ovulation does not occur.

Your body assesses the levels of progesterone in your blood. Women who are planning to become pregnant must ensure ovulation occurs every month and that an egg is released. A Better2Know progesterone test is carried out at Day 21 of the menstrual cycle to determine whether ovulation has occurred.

Assessing progesterone levels in women who experience heavy, painful, irregular, or absent periods can help them to understand if fertility is likely to be an issue or if they are in perimenopause.

Why should I consider a progesterone test?

This test is ideal for anyone who would like to assess progesterone levels in their blood. In particular, it is useful for women who are planning to get pregnant or have been trying unsuccessfully to conceive. The Better2Know progesterone test is also useful for women trying to identify the cause of abnormal menstrual cycles.

How will I receive my test results?

Results will be available after just one working day from the receipt of your sample in the laboratory. The results can be accessed online in the secure patient login area of our website. You will also be contacted by a member of our Patient Services team when your results are available.

What should I do with my results?

If your test reveals abnormal levels of progesterone, then it is advisable to see a doctor. Better2Know can arrange private doctor's consultations throughout the country, either prior to your test or after you receive your results. A doctor will be able to provide you with advice and the right treatment for you.
