Can I get an STI if my partner and I did not have sex?

You can still get an STI even if you do not have full sexual intercourse. While having unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex will put you at higher risk of contracting or spreading an STI, some infections can also be spread in other ways.

The Herpes Simplex Virus, Syphilis, and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can spread through skin-to-skin contact, such as coming into contact with a sore, wart, or skin blemish.  Other STIs, like HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, can be spread through any blood-to-blood contact.  This includes needle stick injuries, using unsterilised equipment, or sharing needles.

If you are concerned about a sexual encounter, whether or not you used protection, you should get an STI test. You can use our online chat to speak to one of our advisors or book online now.

What is a sexually transmitted infection?

A sexually transmitted infection (STI), sometimes called a sexually transmitted disease (STD), is an infection that is most often passed from one person to another during sex.  This can include skin, blood, semen, or bodily fluid contact.

HIV is passed on by blood-to-blood contact which can occur during penetrative sex, or the sharing of needles.  Herpes is passed on by skin to skin contact and can be passed on whether or not penetration occurred.

You do not need to have vaginal or anal sex to have an STI.  STIs can be passed on during oral sex, kissing and mutual masturbation.

STIs usually do not have symptoms in the first few weeks of a new infection, which is why they are easy to pass on.  You can book your appointment today by calling our 24/7 Indore helpline. You can also book online using the map on this page to find a sexual health clinic near you.

Chlamydia testing in Indore

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Indore.  Most people do not know they have a Chlamydia infection as over 50% of women and 75% of men do not have any symptoms.  This means that they can unknowingly pass Chlamydia on to their next partner.  If left untreated Chlamydia can damage your health and fertility.

If you are worried about a Chlamydia infection, your Better2Know clinic in Indore offers fast and accurate Chlamydia testing options. All you need to do is provide a small self-collected urine sample at one of our Indore health clinics.

You can book your appointment online now or call our 24/7 helpline if you have any questions.

STIs and pregnancy in Indore

When you or your partner is pregnant in Indore, it is one of the most important times for a woman not to get an STI.  Having an STI while you are pregnant can cause serious damage to your unborn baby.  You should always follow the advice of your Indore doctor and midwife when you are pregnant, but if you are worried you should test for:

  • HIV

  • Herpes (if you have never had herpes before)

  • Chlamydia

  • Gonorrhoea

  • Syphilis

STIs can be passed on to your baby before or during the birth.  Most transmissions (passing on to your baby) can be prevented (including HIV) but your midwife needs to know that you have an STI to be able to stop the baby becoming unwell.

Book your test online by choosing the sexual health clinic nearest you in Indore or call us on the number above.
