What happens at my STI test appointment in Durban?

Getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases with Better2Know is quick and simple.

Arrive at your chosen clinic at the scheduled time. After you do, a member of our clinic staff will greet you and send you to a private consultation room.

You will then meet a trained medical professional who will take your test samples. They will take your blood sample and provide you with tools to self-collect a swab or urine sample if needed. This process should take around 10-15 minutes.

After your appointment is over, you can carry on with your day. Your test samples will be processed at our laboratory, and your test results will be posted to your Patient Area when they are ready.

If you test positive for any infections, we will arrange a consultation with a private doctor who will help you access any medication and treatment you will need.

If you have any questions about the testing process, contact our Durban Patient Services team at the number listed at the top of this page.

How do you get Hepatitis B?

Most people get Hepatitis B through unprotected sexual activity, like through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.

However, Hepatitis B is a blood-borne virus, so you can get it through blood-to-blood contact, like sharing needles for intravenous drug use or using unsterilised tattooing equipment.

Hepatitis B can cause damage to your liver if left untreated. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

If you think you may have Hepatitis B, book a quick blood test at a clinic in Durban today.

What STI tests should I get?

If you do not know what test to get, Better2Know recommends getting one of our comprehensive STD testing options. Here are some of our most popular screens:

  • Comfort Screen: A comprehensive screen that tests for infections that cause discomfort in the genital area, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Gardnerella, Mycoplasma, Trichomonas, Ureaplasma, and Herpes I & II (includes a Urine Culture)

  • Blemish Screen: This screen uses a swab sample to test for infections that may cause warts, sores, or chancres on your skin. It tests for Syphilis, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Genital Warts, and Herpes I & II

  • Full Screen: This screen is ideal for people who want to get a full view of their sexual health. It tests for South Africa’s seven most common STIs, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Hepatitis B, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Mycoplasma, Syphilis, and Ureaplasma

How do you know if you have an STD?

There is no way to know if you have a sexually transmitted disease without getting tested.

Some people think symptoms are a reliable indicator of an infection, but this is not the case. Sexually transmitted infections can share symptoms with other infections, making it more likely that sexually active women and men will dismiss their symptoms, not get treated, and spread the infection to other people.

Also, many STIs do not cause symptoms. You can have a sexually transmitted infection for months or years and not know it.

If you are concerned about a recent sexual encounter and want STI testing, you should book an appointment. Choose a clinic on the map above.
