What kind of samples will I need to provide?

Most STI tests and screens offered by Better2Know in Hazyview require either a blood sample, a urine sample, or a swab sample.  Some screens will require a combination of these.

However, we understand that some people are not comfortable providing intimate swabs. That is why most of our tests and screens only require a blood or urine sample (or both). Swabs only need to be used in certain circumstances when testing for specific infections and are usually self collected.

A trained medical professional will collect blood samples during your appointment. If a urine sample or swab is required, you will be given instructions on how to collect it for your chosen tests.

Call our 24/7 Hazyview helpline for more information about the testing process.

What will happen if I have an STI?

If you have an STI in Hazyview please do not worry.  We are here to help you.  We will help you to speak to one of our doctors who will be able to help you with the next steps.  This may be medication to treat your infection or a referral to a specialist service.  We are always here if you have any questions.

You should also let your partners know that you had an STI.  In your secure online patient area, you will be able to email or SMS your partners (with or without your name) to let them know and to encourage them to get tested in Hazyview or elsewhere in South Africa.

If I have a sexually transmitted disease, can it be cured?

STDs are very common in Hazyview, and most are easily cured. Depending on the infection, you may only need a single dose of medication to clear the infection. The treatment you get will depend on the STD you have tested positive for.

There are some STDs that cannot be cured. These can be effectively managed with the right health care and treatment to help you live a long and healthy life.

What STIs should I get tested for?

If you do not know what specific infections to test for, Better2Know’s medical team recommends the Full STI Screen.  Our doctors have put this screen together for men and women to test for the most common and most important STIs. You can book it online at our private Hazyview sexual health clinic nearest you.

You should wait 28 days since any incident of concern before you have this test.  We just need a blood and urine sample.  The screen tests for:

  • HIV

  • Syphilis

  • Chlamydia

  • Gonorrhoea

  • Hepatitis B

  • Mycoplasma

  • Ureaplasma

If you have not yet waited 28 days.  Do not worry, we have other tests for you to choose from.  Our Early Screens start from an incubation period of just 10 days.  Our friendly booking team are available now to help you to choose the right test for you in Hazyview.

What are the symptoms of an STI?

STIs can have many symptoms: some obvious and some less so. What makes many STIs so common in Hazyview is that many of their symptoms can be minor or mistaken for other less serious infections. Because of this, people may not get tested. That is why it is always better to know your sexual status if you are concerned about any symptoms.

The symptoms you get will depend on the infection. When they do appear, your symptoms may include:

  • Itching or burning sensations in the genitals or the groin area

  • Any unusual discharge from the penis or vagina

  • Pain or burning sensations during urination

  • Pain during normal sexual intercourse

  • New and unusual skin blemishes such as warts, sores, blisters, chancres, or rashes in or around the genitals, anus, or mouth

  • Lasting pain in the lower abdomen

  • Symptoms that may be mistaken for the flu or other infections, such as fever, body aches, or fatigue

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding between periods

Most people with an STI do not have any symptoms in Hazyview. It is possible to have an infection for months or years and not know it.

If you have an STI and leave it untreated, you could develop serious health complications, such as problems with your fertility, an increased risk of developing cancer, reduced immune function, and problems with major organ systems.

Chlamydia testing in Hazyview

Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in Hazyview.  That is why getting tested for it is important, as many people have it.  It is easily transmitted between sexual partners during vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

Most men and women who have a Chlamydia infection do not have any symptoms in the first few months.  However, in this time, Chlamydia can cause serious damage to your health and fertility, including conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy in women, and prostatitis and epididymitis in men.

Better2Know make having a Chlamydia test in Hazyview as easy as possible.  A urine test will detect a genital infection, or a self-collected swab is needed to detect an infection in your throat or anus.  It is important to test all parts of your body that may have Chlamydia.
