What is a cortisol test?

Cortisol plays an important role in the body’s stress response and is often referred to as the stress hormone. When your body reacts to stress, cortisol is released into your bloodstream via your adrenal glands. To analyse the levels of cortisol in the body, our Cortisol test uses a blood sample.

Why consider a cortisol test?

You should consider a cortisol test if you are feeling particularly anxious, stressed, or irritable. Your body can experience long-term exposure to cortisol when you are under constant stress. This long-term exposure to cortisol can increase your risk of developing health issues such as heart disease, obesity, anxiety, and depressions.

Monitoring cortisol-levels can also be used to diagnose potential adrenal gland disorders which can then develop into more serious conditions. For example, Addison’s disease can be caused by an underproduction of cortisol, whilst Cushing’s syndrome can be caused by an over-production of cortisol.

Symptoms of high cortisol levels can include:

  • Obesity, mainly around the torso
  • High blood sugar
  • High blood pressure
  • Red and swollen face
  • Muscle weakness

Symptoms of low cortisol levels can include:

  • Weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting

How does this test work?

You will be asked to provide us with a blood sample at one of our clinics. Once we have collected your sample, it will be sent to our accredited laboratory for analysis.

How will I receive my test results?

Within just one working day of your sample’s arrival at our laboratory, your results will be ready to view. You can access your results via Better2Know’s secure online patient login area.

You will also be notified by our Patient Services team, who will either contact you over the phone, by SMS or by email, to inform you when your results are available.

What should I do with my results?

Better2Know can organise a private doctor consultation at a clinic in a convenient location to you. One of our skilled doctors from our nationwide network will discuss your results with you and determine whether any additional testing or treatment is necessary. Alternatively, if you would prefer, you can take your results to your own GP.

How can I book my test?
